U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of the Democratic Party has been hospitalized and is receiving treatment for a stroke, according to reports by the Washington Post and other local media outlets on November 1st, local time.
Murphy's office stated in a release that while watching his son's hockey game yesterday, he felt numbness in his arm and was rushed to the hospital, where tests confirmed he had suffered a stroke.
The office added that Murphy is currently conscious and mentally alert, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Murphy, 53, serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee and has been a leading voice on immigration and gun policy issues.
Ahead of the 2028 presidential election, he has been frequently mentioned as one of the potential presidential candidates for the Democratic Party.
Leading up to the November 3 midterm elections, he has actively campaigned for Democratic candidates, traveling through battleground states such as North Carolina, Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota.
He was originally scheduled to campaign alongside Democratic candidates in New Hampshire today as well.
Entering politics as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1998, Murphy has served in the state senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, and has been in the U.S. Senate since 2013.
President Donald Trump, when asked by reporters about news of Murphy's stroke, said, "He's quite young, so I was a little surprised to hear the news," and stated that he would reach out to Murphy at an appropriate time.
