A private jet carrying nine people crashed onto a road near a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing everyone on board, CNN reported on the 1st (local time).
The crash site is a road near a residential area located about 6 kilometers south of Palm Beach International Airport.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the crashed jet is a Learjet 60 registered for charter use and was en route from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to the Bahamas in the Caribbean.
Flight tracking data show that the jet plummeted 27,000 feet (approx. 8,230 meters) in the final minute before the crash.
Video released by CNN affiliate WPBF shows the road surface severely warped and gouged out, leaving a large crater where the jet impacted.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the aircraft burst into flames immediately after the crash.
At the time of the accident, sporadic severe thunderstorms were sweeping through the area.
The crashed jet is also reported to have passed through a heavy thunderstorm zone a few minutes before it began its rapid descent.
However, it remains unclear whether the thunderstorms caused the crash.
The FAA plans to investigate the cause of the accident alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Authorities have restricted access around the crash site and advised using detours until further notice.
According to NTSB records, this accident marks the second-deadliest aviation disaster in the U.S. this year.
Previously in June, a light aircraft used for skydiving crashed in Butler, Missouri, killing 12 people.
President Donald Trump was reportedly staying at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, before departing from nearby Palm Beach International Airport aboard Air Force One about an hour before the accident.
