The Ministry of Science and ICT announced today (November 1) that it has appointed Kim Se-woong, former Kakao AI Synergy Performance Leader (Vice President), as the head of the National AI Service Innovation Promotion Task Force.

Director Kim is a private-sector expert with extensive experience and organizational management capabilities in the AI service sector, ranging from artificial intelligence technology development and service commercialization to infrastructure building, after founding and managing the tech startup Mightyworks in 2009.

The Ministry explained the background of his appointment, stating, "He is evaluated as the most suitable person to swiftly stabilize the task force and drive fast-paced service development outcomes."

The National AI Service Innovation Promotion Task Force was newly established this year to develop and provide artificial intelligence (AI) services that the public can truly experience, built upon private-sector innovation and public-sector accountability.

Unlike outsourcing-centered development methods, the task force is spearheaded by 26 talented private-sector developers hired as fixed-term public officials alongside public-sector "AI Champions" who possess artificial intelligence development capabilities. Its defining characteristic is discovering public demand directly, solving problems, and developing services.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the recruitment plan for private experts (developers) for the task force in August and held an open recruitment for the head position in September.

The new task force head, who begins working starting November 2, was finally selected through screening procedures including document and interview evaluations, and his term runs until September 30, 2028.

Director Kim stated in his inaugural remarks, "AI innovation experienced by the public goes beyond introducing new technologies; it starts with genuinely resolving the inconveniences people face in their daily lives. Based on my accumulated experience in AI technology and service development from the private sector, I will combine private-sector speed and innovation with public accountability to rapidly deliver AI services that provide practical help to the public."

Along with its full-scale operation, the task force plans to carry out additional recruitment of private experts starting in early November to strengthen its AI service development capabilities.
