▲ Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon expresses his stance regarding his acquittal following the appellate sentencing hearing for the "alleged proxy payment of opinion polls involving Myung Tae-gyun" held at the Seoul High Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on October 23.
In response to the independent counsel team led by Min Joong-ki appealing the appellate acquittal of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon on charges of violating the Political Funds Act to the Supreme Court, Mayor Oh's camp criticized that "the logic is becoming increasingly weak."
Lee Jong-hyun, Seoul's Special Advisor for People's Livelihood Communication, released a statement titled "An Expected Appeal; Repeating the Same Arguments Will Not Create Non-Existent Evidence," emphasizing this point.
Special Advisor Lee pointed out, "The moment Myung Tae-gyun said 'I don't know that person' regarding Mayor Oh in the recorded phone conversation between Kim Han-jung and Myung Tae-gyun, the logic of the indictment raised by the special counsel collapsed," adding, "The special counsel's grounds for appeal also failed to break away from the logic maintained throughout the first and second trials."
"The special counsel is repeating claims that have already been dismissed by objective evidence and statements like a broken record," Lee said. "The missed call on January 22, the message from the camp official, and the transfer of 10 million won were all thoroughly examined and judged by the appellate court."
He further explained, "The grounds presented one by one by the appellate court in sentencing him not guilty are more than sufficient—such as the fact that the opinion poll work began before the time Myung Tae-gyun reportedly received the commissioned call, a companion who should have listened to the call from the side stated they do not remember hearing Mayor Oh's voice, and most of the opinion poll results were handed over to the party leadership at the time, not to Mayor Oh."
He added, "Mayor Oh will remain unshaken and dedicate himself to municipal administration to ensure the citizens can rest easy."
