A man in his 60s has been arrested by police for repeatedly extorting settlement money by intentionally colliding with taxis.

The Daejeon Provincial Police Agency announced that it has arrested and forwarded a former taxi driver, identified as A, to the prosecution on fraud charges.

Police stated that A is suspected of pocketing 1.37 million won in settlement money across 11 instances from 2023 until this month. He used a method of waiting near crosswalks on a bicycle and intentionally crashing into approaching taxis.

Police investigations revealed that A, a former taxi driver himself, targeted the fact that cab drivers prefer cash settlements to avoid penalty points or accident records.

However, the investigation also showed that four of the 11 attempts failed after some taxi drivers expressed their intention to report the incidents to the police.

A reportedly stated during police questioning that he committed the crimes to secure living expenses.
