The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that it inspected 4,531 convenience stores and unmanned food stores that cook and sell items such as coffee and fried chicken, catching 33 locations that violated the Food Sanitation Act.

The ministry has been conducting quarterly inspections this year to raise the level of hygiene and safety management at convenience stores and unmanned food stores. This latest inspection was carried out jointly with local governments from September 14 to 18.

Among convenience stores, 14 out of 3,275 inspected locations were caught.

The most common violation, found at 11 locations, was storing and selling products past their consumption expiry dates.

This was followed by one case each of failing to wear hygiene hats and masks, failing to undergo health checkups, and failing to provide lids on waste containers.

Among unmanned food stores, 19 out of 1,256 locations had poor sanitary conditions.

The violations included storing and selling products past their consumption expiry dates at 18 locations, and repacking and selling packaged foods at one location.

The ministry stated that the local governments with jurisdiction will take administrative measures against the penalized businesses.

During this inspection, the ministry added that tests for food poisoning bacteria were conducted on 112 food items, such as chicken cooked and sold at convenience stores, and no substandard products were found.
