An 80-year-old man has been injured on Jangbongdo Island in Ongjin-gun, Incheon, after being struck by a shotgun blast fired by a hunter trying to catch a water deer.
According to the Incheon Yeongjong Police Station and fire authorities, a report was received at around 11:15 a.m. yesterday (October 23) stating that a man in his 80s, identified as A, had been shot at a chili pepper field on Jangbongdo Island in Ongjin-gun.
A, who was farming in the field at the time, suffered injuries to his leg from birdshot fired by a hunter in his 70s, identified as B. He was transported to a hospital and is currently receiving treatment.
Police investigations revealed that B had visited the island at the request of a resident who asked for help in getting rid of water deer.
B was confirmed to be an experienced hunter with a licensed firearm who had retrieved his shotgun from a police station for the purpose of culling water deer.
Investigations showed that B fired a shot toward a water deer in a cabbage field and then fired a second shot, anticipating the direction the animal would flee.
The issue was that the water deer was positioned between B and A.
As a result, the second round of birdshot struck A in the leg.
During police questioning, B reportedly stated that he did not see A because A was sitting down.
Police have booked B on charges of occupational negligence resulting in bodily injury under the Criminal Act and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
