A woman in her 40s has been arrested by police in Seoul's Gangseo District on charges of murdering her elderly biological mother.

The Seoul Gangseo Police Station announced that it is urgently investigating the woman, identified as A, in her 40s, on charges of killing her mother this morning in Ujangsan-dong, Gangseo District.

Police responded to a self-report made by A at around 8:15 a.m. today stating that she had killed her mother, and apprehended her at the crime scene residence at approximately 8:40 a.m.

It was determined that only A and the victim were inside the home at the time of the crime.

After police arrived at the scene, A's daughter, who was outside the house, also called the police, reporting, "My mom is saying strange things. Grandma isn't answering her phone."

According to police investigations, A had told her daughter that the victim, her mother, had attempted to feed her poisoned food.

However, police stated that no circumstances related to poison have been confirmed so far.

There were no financial disputes or specific past grudges between A and the victim, though it was reported that A had a history of receiving treatment for a mental illness.

Police have secured testimonies indicating that A had previously expressed negative feelings toward the victim, including using abusive language.

While A reportedly told emergency services during her initial call that she "did a bad thing to her stepmother," police investigations confirmed that the two are actually biological mother and daughter.

Consequently, police plan to upgrade the murder charge initially applied at the time of her emergency arrest to patricide/matricide (parricide).
