A blacktip shark named "Bukang-i," which had been staying in the artificial waterway of the Busan North Port waterfront park for over a month, has exited the waterway following the authorities' third containment and guidance operation.

This comes 33 days after it was first spotted on September 18.

Related agencies including the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Busan Metropolitan City government, the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, and the National Institute of Fisheries Science conducted the third guidance operation today (October 21) to return the shark to the open sea.

Initiating the operation around 10:00 a.m., the authorities used nets and a floating platform called a pontoon to guide Bukang-i from the 4th and 5th pedestrian bridges toward the Marina Bridge.

After setting up nets about 60 meters away from the exit and continuing the guidance efforts, Bukang-i was spotted around 6:00 p.m. in the waters in front of Pier 1 outside the waterway.

However, the authorities noted that the waters in front of Pier 1 can hardly be considered the open sea, and they are not ruling out the possibility that the shark might return inside the waterway.

The authorities plan to continue monitoring Bukang-i's movements.
