▲ Fire at an apartment in Namyangju
A fire broke out on the fifth floor of a 21-story apartment building in Dogok-ri, Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, at around 9:08 p.m. yesterday (October 20).
As the fire broke out, about 30 apartment residents evacuated the building on their own, resulting in no casualties.
The fire burned 5 square meters of the apartment interior and an electric bicycle battery, causing property damage estimated by the fire department at approximately 5.57 million won.
Fire authorities mobilized 20 pieces of equipment and about 60 personnel, completely extinguishing the fire 13 minutes after it started.
Police and fire authorities believe the fire originated from a thermal runaway phenomenon in the electric bicycle battery while it was being charged, and are investigating the exact cause of the fire.
