Ahead of its initial public offering (IPO), Anthropic has decided to allocate 5 percent of its equity to a newly established public interest fund.

Combined with previous commitments, approximately 20 percent of the company's equity will be used for public interest purposes.

Anthropic announced through its official blog on the 18th (local time) that, subject to shareholder approval, it will contribute a 5 percent stake to the "Anthropic Public Interest Fund."

It also decided that whenever the company's valuation increases by 50 percent above a set baseline value, an additional 2 percent stake will be transferred at the discretion of the board of directors.

The structure is designed so that as the company grows, the equity dedicated to the public interest also increases.

Anthropic stated that the fund could be used for large-scale donations to non-profit organizations or direct distribution to specific groups, citing the impact of AI on the labor market as a prime example.

"AI can create massive economic value, but it can also cause instability for many workers," Anthropic said. "Given the pace of AI advancement, a bolder approach may be necessary."

Anthropic previously pledged 200 million dollars to research and address the impact of AI on the labor market, and this new fund serves to expand upon that commitment.

The fund will be established in the form of a limited liability company (LLC) wholly funded by Anthropic.

Anthropic stated that the equity held by the fund will not be used for lobbying or political donations within or outside the United States.

"Tech companies often grant increasing compensation to their executives, but we instead return that equity to the public interest," Anthropic said.

Combined with the co-founders' pledges to donate 80 percent of their equity and an employee equity donation matching program, approximately 20 percent of the company's equity will be used for public interest purposes.

Anthropic is preparing for what could be the largest-scale IPO ever in the form of a public benefit corporation (PBC).

The fund's governance structure and the baseline valuation thresholds for expanding equity are scheduled to be disclosed in the coming months.
