A woman in her 20s has been sentenced to prison for falsely reporting that she was raped six times under the pretext of a financial dispute after having consensual sexual relations with a man she met through a chat application.
The Cheongju District Court's Chungju Branch (Presiding Judge Kim Joo-hyun) announced today (October 18) that it sentenced A, a woman in her 20s indicted without detention on charges of false accusation (perjury), to one year in prison.
A was charged with calling 112 after having consensual sex with a man she met via a chat app in April of last year, falsely claiming that the man "threatened her over unpaid money and raped her six times."
However, Judge Kim stated, "Around the time the defendant claimed she was raped, the social media conversations between the two were as natural as those of a couple or friends, making it difficult to find any circumstances indicating she was under the control of coercion."
The judge also ruled, "After borrowing money, the defendant used the victim's credit card for unauthorized purposes or stole 450,000 won from his wallet. The victim merely became angry and told her to stop contacting him, rather than demanding money from the defendant."
"Being indicted for a sex crime alone severely damages one's social reputation, yet the defendant denies the crime without showing remorse," the judge said, explaining the sentencing reasons while considering that "the victim is petitioning for a strict punishment."
