It has been revealed that some 1,400 infants and toddlers aged 5 and under own homes.
Rep. Jeon Yong-ki of the main opposition Democratic Party, a member of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, made the announcement today (16th) based on data on "housing owners aged 5 and under" submitted by the National Data Office.
According to the data, as of 2024, there were a total of 1,440 housing owners aged 5 or younger, and the value of their housing assets reached approximately 236.05 billion KRW.
Among them, 56 were found to be multi-homeowners possessing two or more houses.
According to National Tax Service data, real estate income generated by children aged 5 and under amounted to 2.74 billion KRW as of 2024.
"While young adults struggle with worries over lease fraud let alone buying a home, we live in a reality where some own multiple houses even before entering elementary school," Rep. Jeon said. "We must step up policy efforts to correct a structure where unearned real estate income widens the wealth gap, and channel funds concentrated in real estate toward productive investments."
