The Japanese animated film 'Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island' has reclaimed the top spot at the box office.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing network on the 15th, 'Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island' drew 75,246 moviegoers nationwide on the 14th, which was Culture Day. Its cumulative audience now stands at 1,415,028.
Having opened on September 30, 'Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island' previously claimed the daily box office No. 1 spot twice, but spent most of its run trailing behind 'The Assassin(s)' in second place. Entering its third week of release, the film outpaced 'The Assassin(s)', which began seeing a decline starting on Culture Day, by a margin of more than double to recapture the top spot.
'Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island' is an animated film that follows Chiikawa and friends as they head to an uncharted island lured by the temptation of a hundredfold reward, only to uncover a suspicious suppression mission hidden there. It is based on the popular long-form 'Siren' arc from the manga series created by Japanese illustrator Nagano.
