The Iranian Navy stated on the 13th (local time) that it is tracking and monitoring the activities of all vessels in the eastern waters of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been designated as a navigation-prohibited zone, and reported that a fire broke out on an oil tanker within this zone.
In a statement released that day, the Iranian Navy explained, "Around noon today, our naval surveillance team detected an oil tanker attempting to pass through the prohibited zone with its location tracking device turned off," adding, "A fire broke out on this vessel after its hull was damaged while passing through the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz."
The Iranian military did not specify the exact cause of the fire on the oil tanker.
However, the Iranian military has repeatedly warned in the past that vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission could be blown up by mines or attacked.
The Iranian Navy added that it has forward-deployed units to areas including the eastern Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian Sea to monitor the movements of all vessels, including hostile forces.
Previously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned on the 9th that penalties for vessels violating Iranian maritime regulations would not be limited to the Strait of Hormuz alone.
IRGC Spokesperson Hossein Mohebi announced the introduction of a navigation-prohibited zone in the eastern Strait of Hormuz.
According to this, vessels passing through the zone must coordinate with Iranian authorities in advance, and failure to do so will result in sanctions.
