Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young has promised to look into ways to increase the proportion of the Movie Development Fund allocated to the animation sector.

During the 4th meeting of the Animation Subcommittee of the Culture and Arts Policy Advisory Committee held today (13th) at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Minister Choi responded to advisory members' requests to "ensure that the Movie Development Fund is used sufficiently more for the development of animation films" by saying, "I will look into it."

Established in 2007 under the Act on the Promotion of Motion Pictures and Video Products, the Movie Development Fund is used for purposes such as film production support, film distribution support, film policy support, and the advancement of cutting-edge film technologies to foster and support the film industry.

The fund is raised through levies on movie theater tickets and government contributions, and is operated and managed by the Korean Film Council.

Advisory members urged the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to devise improvement measures, pointing out that "even though domestic animation films account for about 27 percent of all domestic films, only about 2 billion won out of the roughly 30 billion won in the Movie Development Fund last year was spent on animation film development."

The advisory members also noted that "next year's budget related to animation stands at 33.8 billion won, a decrease of 5.2 billion won from this year's budget of 39 billion won," pointing out that "despite the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's overall budget increasing by about 20 percent, the animation sector seems to be receiving relatively less attention."

In response, Minister Choi promised, "I will carefully check the points you have raised," adding, "Based on various opinions from the field, we will build a solid ecosystem so that success stories of K-animation can continue without interruption."
