President Lee Jae-myung stated his position yesterday (October 10) regarding criticism from some quarters over his so-called social media message politics.
President Lee stated, "They will criticize me for lacking dignity or authority, but I will continue visiting back alleys where real life unfolds with minimal security, communicating through social media, and connecting with people in their own language."
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Lee wrote, "I am reminded of President Roh Moo-hyun, who was criticized and mocked for lacking dignity while communicating with the public through comments."
He added, "It is also said that (former President Roh) even refrained from visiting traditional markets out of concern that security details and advance inspections would cause inconvenience to citizens."
Reiterating his past remark that "Lee Jae-myung will always be right next to you," he said, "The commitment and resolve I offered to the public when I first ran for president have not changed for a single moment," adding, "Politics and power must be directed toward the lowest places."
He emphasized, "That is why communicating with the parents, siblings, and children in narrow back alleys—who are powerless, have less, and are marginalized, yet live more diligently than anyone else—feeling their breath, and reflecting on the grave responsibility of state affairs are precious and indispensable moments that I cannot give up."
President Lee has recently been voicing his opinions extensively on social media regarding various issues, including controversy over the qualifications of Serious Crime Investigation Agency chief nominee Kim Ji-yong, prosecution reform, the repatriation of North Korean prisoners of war, diplomatic friction with Ukraine, and real estate policy.
He has also frequently been visiting local traditional markets during his regional schedules.
