World No. 8 Novak Djokovic, who secured his first title of the year at the China Open three days ago, suffered an early exit in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters.
Djokovic lost 2-0 to world No. 34 Hubert Hurkacz in 87 minutes during the second round of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour Shanghai Masters held in Shanghai, China.
Having received a bye in the first round, this match marked Djokovic's debut in the tournament.
On the 6th, he claimed his first victory of the year and the 102nd ATP Tour title of his career by defeating Alex de Minaur via retirement in the China Open final.
Although he captured his seventh career title at the China Open—his first appearance at the tournament in 11 years—and extended his tournament winning streak record to 34 matches, he was tripped up by Hurkacz, the 2023 champion of the event.
With his China Open victory, Djokovic moved within one title of tying Roger Federer's ATP Tour singles title record.
However, following his early elimination in the opening match of this tournament, matching the record has been postponed to a later date.
