The man in his 50s, who was apprehended in Muan on Tuesday (October 6) on charges of murdering a couple in their 60s in Naju.
During police questioning, he stated that he committed the crime after going to collect money he had lent to them.
Immediately following the crime, the man also withdrew 6 million won using the victims' debit card.
Police have secured account records to verify whether any actual debt relationship existed.
However, village residents have disputed his statement, saying the couple were not the type of people to borrow money from others.
[Village Resident: (The victim) is not someone who would live their life like that over money issues. They are very neat people. They are good at giving to others, to the point where they would take less than what they were owed.]
[Village Resident: They are wealthy, very wealthy. The richest people in our village. They have nowhere they need to spend money. Why would someone like that borrow money?]
The man reportedly told police during the investigation that he had no intention of killing them from the beginning.
However, security camera footage from the day of the crime showed that the man had covered his face with a hat and a mask.
Circumstances also indicated that he attempted to disrupt the investigation by switching between a truck, a bicycle, and a car after the crime.
It was also reported that almost no footprints or fingerprints belonging to the man were found at the crime scene.
Based on various circumstances leaning toward a premeditated crime, police have changed the man's charge from murder to robbery-homicide and requested an arrest warrant.
