Jim Furyk, the captain of the U.S. team for the Ryder Cup golf showdown between the United States and Europe, has expressed his desire to add Patrick Reed, with whom he previously had a strained relationship, to the team.
According to the Associated Press, Furyk said at a press conference held in Ireland on the 7th (Korean time), marking one year until the opening of the 2027 Ryder Cup, "We are going to build a team with the 12 best players, and I hope Reed is one of them."
Reed joined the U.S. team led by Captain Furyk at the 2018 Ryder Cup.
However, following a crushing defeat to the European team at the tournament, Reed criticized Furyk in an interview with the media, claiming, "The captain benched me twice."
Reed has not been selected for the U.S. Ryder Cup team since then.
Having left the PGA Tour to move to LIV Golf starting in 2022, Reed decided not to renew his contract with LIV Golf after this year.
As he is currently leading the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) points standings, a return to the PGA Tour next year is considered likely.
At the Ryder Cup, which will be held for three days starting September 17 next year at Adare Manor in Ireland, the U.S. team will select six players based on performance and the remaining six through captain's picks.
Furyk added, "I will have a conversation with Patrick. I look forward to welcoming the top 12 players."
