A man in his 70s who tracked down a woman he unilaterally believed was his romantic partner and attempted to kill her by slashing her with a weapon and spraying acid has been sentenced to 5 years in prison.
According to the legal community on October 6, the 1st Criminal Division of the Busan District Court Seobu Branch (Presiding Judge Na Won-sik) sentenced A, who was indicted on charges of attempted murder and violation of the Act on Punishment of Stalking Crimes, to 5 years in prison.
A was put on trial for attempting to murder B, who was working at a store in Sasang-gu, Busan, at around 5:32 PM on June 3, by repeatedly slashing her with a weapon and spraying acid on her head and neck.
Investigations showed that A unilaterally considered B to be his lover and held a grudge because B took care of other people.
Prior to the crime, on May 17, A was caught red-handed and arrested for special intimidation after threatening B while carrying a weapon.
Police applied for an arrest warrant for A citing concerns over reoffending and the need to protect the victim, but the court dismissed it.
Subsequently, on June 1, A returned to the store where B worked, saying, "Don't you have anything to say to me?" and handed her a piece of paper with his phone number on it.
When B reported this to the police, A packed a weapon from his home two days later, purchased acid, and returned to the store to commit the crime.
The court explained the sentencing reasoning by stating, "The crime was bold and brutal, and considering the circumstances, means, and details, his legal responsibility is heavy and he is highly deserving of blame. The victim continues to complain of anxiety and fear and has petitioned for a strict punishment."
