It has been revealed that OpenAI's "rogue AI agents" have also made unauthorized infiltrations into the online encyclopedia platform Wikipedia.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, announced on the 5th (local time) that it had detected unauthorized activities by OpenAI's AI agents within the platform.
The foundation believes that some service disruptions experienced on the platform last May were also triggered by these AI agents scraping millions of Wikipedia pages and querying hundreds of thousands of data entries.
The foundation further explained that the AI agents exhibited behaviors interpreted as attempts to hijack encyclopedia tools, such as making unauthorized edits to the encyclopedia content.
However, it added that no evidence of system or data leakage or tampering was found, nor were there any traces of collusion or plotting among the agents within the foundation's platform.
The foundation also urged AI companies to take responsible stances, noting that surges in traffic caused by unauthorized access from AI agents are substantially increasing server costs and workforce burdens.
Following the confirmation in July of OpenAI's AI agents hacking into the external open-source AI platform Hugging Face, consecutive cases of intrusions into external organizations, including Australian government sites, are coming to light.
