It has been confirmed that an official belonging to the National Court Administration under the Supreme Court was dismissed in June for illicit filming.

Including this case, approximately 40% of disciplinary actions taken against court officials nationwide from 2021 until August of this year were heavy disciplinary actions.

According to data submitted by the Supreme Court to the office of Representative Kim Yong-min of the Democratic Party of Korea on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, a court assistant secretary belonging to the National Court Administration was dismissed on June 30 for "violation of the obligation to maintain dignity (filming using cameras, etc.)."

The Supreme Court stated, "There is a concern that the individual's personal information may be identified," and did not disclose personal details, including their name.

A total of 189 disciplinary actions were recorded against court officials over the approximately six-year period from January 1, 2021, to August 31, of this year.

Among them, heavy disciplinary actions such as dismissal, removal from office, demotion, and suspension reached 71 cases, accounting to 37.6%.

The most common reason for discipline was drunk driving, with 41 cases.

The number of disciplinary cases by year was 22 in 2021, 30 in 2022, 42 in 2023, 44 in 2024, 28 in 2025, and 23 in 2026 (through August 31).

The reasons for discipline among those disciplined this year were in the order of ▲ dereliction of duty and negligence (6 cases), ▲ unfair collection of overtime pay (4 cases), ▲ drunk driving (3 cases), and ▲ workplace harassment and causing civil complaints (2 cases each).

Other reasons included ▲ false entry of overtime work, ▲ delayed service of documents and handover of records, and ▲ violation of profit-making business and dual-employment prohibitions.

Looking at the breakdown by affiliated court, the Seoul Western District Court had the most with 4 officials, followed by the Suwon District Court, the Seoul Central District Court, and the National Court Administration with 3 officials each.

Among the 6 officials disciplined for dereliction of duty and negligence, 3 received warnings, while the rest were given suspensions or pay cuts.

Among them, the heaviest penalty was a 6-month suspension and a disciplinary surcharge of 10 million won imposed in 2021 on a presiding judge then belonging to the Daejeon District Court for receiving money and valuables.

Investigations showed that this presiding judge modified the suspect interrogation protocol of an acquaintance who was facing a complaint in 2017 and received a total of 10 million won.

He was sent to trial on charges of violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act and had a fine finalized.

This year, there were cases including a presiding judge at the Seoul Central District Court receiving a 3-month pay cut for drunk driving on February 3, and a presiding judge at the Suwon District Court receiving a 3-month suspension and a disciplinary surcharge of approximately 3.474 million won on August 13 for receiving financial support for a golf trip from an acquaintance standing trial.
