Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok predicted today (October 3) regarding the 2028 general election, "The main battleground of the 2028 general election will be Busan and the Nakdong River."
Speaking at a youth meeting held in Busan that day, Kim said, "A major battlefield toward the future will open not along the Han River, but along the Nakdong River and in Busan, and we will win there."
Kim emphasized, "Busan is the place that produced Presidents YS (Kim Young-sam), Roh Moo-hyun, and Moon Jae-in," adding, "Busan, home to the Buma (Democratic Protests), and Gwangju (Democratization Movement) are the two leading cities of democratization."
He continued, "We are pursuing constitutional revision, and enshrining the spirit of the Buma protests and May 18 in the preamble of the Constitution must be carried out before any restructuring of the power structure," adding, "Rather than the People Power Party, which refuses this, the Democratic Party must become the force that truly inherits the legitimacy of YS."
Kim stressed, "Although President Kim Young-sam had faults, such as the IMF (International Monetary Fund) crisis, his merits in democracy are at least worthy of recognition and praise by the Democratic Party," adding, "Completely resolving the December 12 military insurrection and enacting the May 18 Special Act were YS's achievements."
He went on to say, "Among People Power Party lawmakers, there are those who not only deny May 18, but also deny the insurrectionary nature of Chun Doo-hwan's coup," adding, "This must be resolved constitutionally. I believe it is fundamental to prevent politicians who make arguments outside the Constitution from entering the National Assembly, which deals with the Constitution and laws, in the first place."
This was interpreted as remarks targeting People Power Party lawmaker Lee Jin-sook, who stirred controversy over "distorting May 18," and People Power Party lawmaker Kim Tae-gyu, who stated regarding former President Chun Doo-hwan that "it was not an insurrection."
Regarding the development of Busan, Kim emphasized, "Gadeokdo New Airport was an agenda of President Moon Jae-in, and the North Port redevelopment was a task of President Roh Moo-hyun. The maritime capital was taken on as a task by President Lee Jae-myung, and the domed stadium was raised by us," adding, "It must be done, and it will be done."
