"I Was Stabbed," Urgent Call Brought 7 Police Officers, but There's a Twist

A woman in her 30s who was put on trial on charges of making multiple false calls to 112 claiming that "someone stabbed me" and dispatching police officers has been acquitted.

According to the legal community, Judge Kim Hee-dong of Criminal Division 3 at the Uijeongbu District Court acquitted a woman in her 30s, referred to as A, who had been indicted without detention on charges of obstruction of official duties.

At around 8:40 PM on August 20 of last year, A called 112 from an apartment in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, stating, "Someone came with a knife and stabbed me. My stomach hurts. They just opened the door and left."

At the time, A had not actually been stabbed, but upon receiving the report, police made an emergency dispatch of seven officers, including those from the local police box, to A's home.

A had previously made multiple 112 calls.

Investigations showed that earlier that day at 6:10 PM, she also made a report claiming that someone had entered her home.

A was sent to trial on charges of obstructing the police's 112 emergency response duties by deceiving officers with a false report.

However, the court judged that it was difficult to conclude that A had deceived the police while recognizing that her report was false.

The court explained, "After the incident, A was diagnosed with mental illnesses at two medical institutions, and regarding the earlier 112 report on the day of the incident, a police officer recorded that 'the reporter genuinely believes that a man from the downstairs household entered her residence.' There was also a statement from A's husband confirming that her symptoms began four years ago."

The court added, "In the crime of obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means, deception refers to causing another party to misunderstand, be mistaken, or remain ignorant to achieve the perpetrator's goal, and based solely on the submitted evidence, it is difficult to see that proof has been established beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant recognized her report as false and caused the police officers to experience misunderstanding, mistake, or ignorance."
