U.S. media outlets, including The New York Times (NYT), reported that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to appoint Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Jay Clayton as the "AI czar."
The DNI director oversees 18 U.S. intelligence agencies, and if Clayton takes on the role of AI czar, he will hold both positions concurrently.
Director Clayton attended a luncheon meeting at the White House between President Trump and the heads of major tech companies on September 29.
In an interview with U.S. media on the same day, President Trump also gave a positive response regarding the plan to have Director Clayton take charge as the AI czar.
The NYT pointed out that while the AI czar is expected to play a role in planning the Trump administration's AI policies and regulations, it remains unclear what specific duties the position will entail, or whether it will include reviewing new models and establishing safety standards.
President Trump has dismissed arguments for slowing down driven by concerns over loss of control, stating that AI will bring growth momentum surpassing the Industrial Revolution.
It was reported that Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe recommended Clayton for both the DNI director and AI czar positions.
In the Trump administration, high-ranking officials sometimes hold multiple roles concurrently.
