▲ Global DRAM Market Share in Q2 2026
Micron, which announced record-high earnings for the second quarter of this year, has closely pursued second-place SK Hynix in the global DRAM market.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on October 2, Samsung Electronics ranked first in the second-quarter DRAM market share by revenue at 38%.
Second and third places went to SK Hynix at 25% and Micron at 24%, respectively, with a gap of only 1 percentage point (P) between the two companies.
In the previous quarter, the market shares were 38% for Samsung Electronics, 29% for SK Hynix, and 22% for Micron, resulting in SK Hynix dropping by 4 percentage points while Micron rose by 2 percentage points.
Samsung Electronics maintained its top spot for three consecutive quarters with the same market share as the previous quarter.
Micron posted record quarterly earnings in its recently announced fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 (June to August), recording revenue of $54.23 billion (approximately 73.6 trillion won).
Its gross margin stood at 86.8%, rising by more than 2 percentage points compared to the previous quarter (84.6%).
Counterpoint Research stated, "Micron's second-quarter DRAM revenue surged fivefold compared to the same period last year, narrowing the gap with SK Hynix," adding, "As Micron demonstrated both a sharp increase in revenue and improved profitability in this earnings report, the competition for second place in the DRAM market will be a key point to watch next quarter."
Taking fourth place in the second-quarter market share was China's CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies), which recorded 10%, up 2 percentage points from 8% in the previous quarter.
Compared to 4% during the same period last year, this is more than double the level.
Counterpoint Research projected that supply shortages across the memory industry will likely continue for the time being.
Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron, said during the earnings conference call, "The supply and demand situation for memory and storage in 2027 and 2028 will be much tighter than in 2026," adding, "More than 75% of our 2027 production volume has already been secured through sales contracts."
