▲ Unification Minister Chung Dong-young, who cut short his business trip to Europe and returned home following the North Korean landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), answers questions from reporters on his way to work at the Government Complex Seoul in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on October 2.
Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said regarding the landmine explosion on the western front that "it is natural to demand an apology from North Korea."
However, regarding calls from some quarters to resume loudspeaker broadcasts toward North Korea, he made his opposition clear, calling it "an irresponsible and highly dangerous act."
Minister Chung made the remarks on his way to work this morning (October 2) after concluding his European trip, meeting with reporters to call the incident an "unfortunate event" and offering consolations to the wounded soldiers and their families before delivering his statement.
Minister Chung said, "The core cause of this incident is ultimately the border demarcation issue along the Armistice Line," adding, "As the Minister of Unification, I make a proposal to North Korea. We must now meet and communicate. We must at least begin communication to reconfirm and establish the Military Demarcation Line."
Minister Chung emphasized, "This incident must not be used as a pretext to undermine or distort the Lee Jae-myung administration's efforts toward peace," stressing, "We have not the slightest intention of being hostile toward the North, and the South and the North must meet again to seek a path of peaceful coexistence."
