Text messages believed to have been exchanged between the victim and the perpetrator have been released regarding allegations that a female student was sexually assaulted by seven male students at Cornell University, a prestigious U.S. Ivy League school.
U.S. CBS News reported on the 29th (local time) that it had obtained and published screen captures of text messages allegedly exchanged between the female victim and the male accused of being a perpetrator two days after the incident.
The male first apologized to the female for how things turned out.
He said his memory was a bit blurry and apologized for not clearing the room and sending people out before the situation completely spiraled out of control.
The female also responded that her memory was extremely blurry and that everyone was heavily intoxicated.
The female then stated that none of the sexual acts were illegal and even suggested to the male that they smoke marijuana together later.
The victim's attorney confirmed that the victim exchanged text messages with the accused male immediately after the incident, but stated that it could not be verified whether the messages recently made public were the ones exchanged at that time.
The attorney further explained that the victim was in a state of psychological shock, in denial of reality right after the incident, and tried not to take an aggressive attitude toward the other person in order to figure out what had happened.
The attorney emphasized that the victim came from a small town, had dreamed of attending Cornell University since childhood, and studied hard to achieve it, adding that such an incident occurred the moment she realized her dream.
The case came to light when a female Cornell student claimed she was sexually assaulted by seven students in October 2024 at the house of the campus fraternity, Chi Phi.
The female student was 20 years old at the time and dropped out of school following the incident.
On the other hand, the victim's attorney stated that only two of the seven accused males were expelled, while the rest received light disciplinary actions such as suspension or writing an essay.
Currently, the real names of those pointed out as perpetrators have been made public on social media and the Cornell student newspaper.
One Korean student with the last name Lee was also included in the list.
The victim has filed a civil lawsuit against them, and local prosecutors have reopened the related investigation.
