People Power Party Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik, regarding the military's response to a suspected landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), said, "The behavior shown by the military was closer to a cover-up and concealment rather than an investigation," adding, "Everything related to this must be fully uncovered through National Assembly hearings and a parliamentary probe."
During the supreme council meeting held at the National Assembly, Floor Leader Jeong said, "On September 26, five days after the incident occurred, the military finally began preparations for an on-site investigation into the DMZ landmine explosion.
Even though it is almost certain to be North Korea's doing, Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul said it was impossible to tell whether it was ours or a North Korean mine," he said.
He continued, "There was also a landmine incident in the 1st Division in 2015 under the Park Geun-hye administration. At that time, the military collected mine fragments on the very day and determined that it was North Korea's doing just six days after the incident," adding, "The reason the military has deteriorated compared to 10 years ago is because of the leftist administration's submissive stance toward North Korea.
Because they put political pressure on the military while trapped in the delusion of a fake peace, the military has failed to remain faithful to its primary mission," he criticized.
Floor Leader Jeong also said, "Even in this situation, President Lee is arguing for trading sanctions relief against North Korea for a nuclear freeze. What weakness did North Korea seize upon that he talks about offering tribute on his own?" adding, "It is baffling to the point that one wonders whether the president of the Republic of Korea is North Korea's public defender."
He emphasized, "The full picture, including the military's delayed investigation following the landmine explosion, must be clearly uncovered."
