Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations urged Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels to halt all military actions on September 21 (local time).
Gathered in New York, United States, to attend the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, the G7 foreign ministers issued a joint statement strongly condemning the Houthi rebels' attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia as unacceptable acts.
The statement came as Houthi rebels have seized a strategic stronghold near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the southern Red Sea, one of the key oil shipping lanes, and engaged in armed clashes against Saudi and Yemeni government forces.
The statement also called on the Houthi rebels to cease threats and attacks against civilian vessels and return to the political process.
Stating that the Houthi rebels are undermining international trade and destabilizing the international situation, the G7 foreign ministers urged Iran to halt military support, including weapons, to the Houthi rebels.
