The National Assembly will receive a government briefing today (September 22) regarding the first project under South Korea's $350 billion investment plan in the United States.
The National Assembly's Economy and Finance Planning Committee and the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee will hold plenary meetings at 9:30 a.m. today to receive a closed-door briefing from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the progress and specific details of the U.S. investment negotiations.
Lee Hyoung-il, nominee for deputy prime minister for economic affairs and minister of economy and finance, is expected to attend the Finance Committee meeting, while Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan and Minister for Trade Park Jeong-seong are expected to attend the Industry Committee meeting.
The briefing will be held with only government officials and lawmakers belonging to the relevant standing committees in attendance.
Staff experts and legislative aides were barred from attending for security reasons, taking into account that negotiations with the U.S. are still ongoing.
The Industry Committee will also deliberate on the schedule for the annual parliamentary audit, the summoning of witnesses, and the adoption of the confirmation hearing report for Lee So-young, the nominee for minister of SMEs and startups.
The committee is expected to adopt Lee's hearing report while concurrently noting grounds for "unsuitability," including her owning a single home without residing in it and a lack of expertise in the small and medium-sized enterprise and microbusiness sectors, which were raised during her confirmation hearing.
