Taiwanese authorities have imposed a total of 1.5 million New Taiwan dollars (approx. 64.89 million won) in fines on Coupang Taiwan and its representative over a data leak controversy.
Taiwanese media outlet Commercial Times reported on the 21st (local time) that Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) issued fines of 750,000 New Taiwan dollars (approx. 32.44 million won) each to the company and its representative last month for violating the Personal Data Protection Act, along with an order to correct the issue.
However, the Ministry of Digital Affairs explained that it did not apply the provision concerning "major incidents," which could have resulted in fines of up to 15 million New Taiwan dollars (approx. 648.9 million won).
The same penalty details have also been posted on the ministry's official website with parts of the company name masked.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs stated that it had been in communication with Coupang Taiwan following a Coupang data leak in South Korea in November of last year, and received a related report from Coupang Taiwan after the South Korean government announced in February that approximately 200,000 users in Taiwan were also affected.
It was reported that the names, email addresses, phone numbers, and delivery addresses of 204,552 Taiwanese customers were illegally accessed.
Commercial Times reported, "Coupang expressed gratitude for the careful investigation and professional guidance of Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs, and stated that it respects the objective judgment of the competent authority," adding, "The company has already paid the fines and implemented corrective measures."
