At around 11:18 AM today (September 19), a 1-ton truck barreled into a crowd of people preparing for a flea market event in front of Gongdo Library in Gongdo-eup, Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do.
The accident left a woman in her 40s and a male teenager in a state of cardiac arrest; they were rushed to the hospital but ultimately passed away.
The two victims were confirmed to be a mother and son.
Additionally, three others—including a man and a woman in their 20s and a man in his 60s—were transported to the hospital with injuries such as leg fractures, while two more received emergency treatment at the scene.
Today's event was the 2026 Sharing Green Market hosted by the city of Anseong.
The vehicle involved belongs to Anseong City, and the driver was identified as a man in his 60s surnamed A, a fixed-term worker affiliated with the Anseong City Hall.
It is presumed that driver A caused the accident while attempting to park on a road near the park to unload second-hand goods from the truck onto the event site.
Immediately following the accident, driver A reportedly stated to the police during questioning that he stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, but later shifted his statement to claim that the vehicle suddenly unintendedly accelerated.
Police are currently investigating the exact cause and circumstances of the accident using CCTV footage, the condition of the vehicle, and statements from the driver and witnesses.
