Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with President Emeritus John Hamre and Korea Chair Victor Cha of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., on the afternoon of September 18, local time, to exchange views on South Korea-U.S. relations and Korean Peninsula issues, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
During the meeting, Minister Cho stated that the South Korea-U.S. foreign ministers' meeting reaffirmed both nations' shared commitment to their robust alliance, and he requested that CSIS continue playing a role in enhancing understanding of the South Korea-U.S. alliance across political circles and society in the United States.
Minister Cho also noted that the South Korean government is working to establish a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, adding that he hopes recent messages from U.S. President Donald Trump will lead to the resumption of dialogue between North Korea and the United States and to peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Chair Cha commended the South Korean government's efforts to build peace on the Korean Peninsula, stating that it is crucial for South Korea and the U.S. to coordinate closely to bring North Korea into meaningful dialogue while maintaining firm extended deterrence.
President Hamre remarked that cooperation with South Korea—a key U.S. ally with high standing and strong capabilities in the international community—is becoming increasingly important, and noted that South Korea needs to make efforts to expand its diplomatic infrastructure.
