World-renowned Mexican master director Alfonso Cuarón is set to attend the 31st Busan International Film Festival.
Alfonso Cuarón first made a name for himself by winning the Best Screenplay award at the 2001 Venice International Film Festival for "Y Tu Mamá También" (2001), and subsequently established a successful foothold in Hollywood with "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (2004) and "Children of Men" (2006).
He emerged as a global master when he won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2018 for "Roma." He reached the pinnacle of his career by winning the Academy Award for Best Director twice, for "Gravity" (2013) and "Roma" (2018).
Cuarón will attend the opening ceremony to mark the beginning of the festival. Afterward, he will hold a special talk following an IMAX screening of "Gravity" and participate in a separate masterclass. Known for drawing audiences deep into the time and emotions of his characters through character-focused cinematography and restrained editing and direction, this will be a special occasion for him to personally share stories about his cinematic choices.
This visit to Korea will be made alongside his son, Jonás Cuarón. Active as a director, Jonás Cuarón is visiting Busan as his new film "Chingo" has been invited to this year's festival's World Cinema section. Jonás Cuarón also co-wrote the screenplay for Alfonso Cuarón's acclaimed film "Gravity."
Following the screenplay for "Gravity," Jonás Cuarón has built his own filmography by directing works such as "Desierto" (2015) and "Chupa" (2023).
"Chingo" portrays the lives of Mexican immigrants struggling to survive in the United States with a humorous yet sharp perspective. Jonás Cuarón also participated in production through his production company Esperanto Filmoj, alongside Alfonso Cuarón and Gabriela Rodríguez, with Nicolás Celis joining as a producer. A Q&A session with the director will be held after the screening.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will take place for ten days from October 6 (Tuesday) to October 15 (Thursday) across areas in Busan, including the Busan Cinema Center.
