A high-level delegation from Iran, which is at war with the United States, is expected to visit the U.S. next week to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.
A U.S. State Department spokesperson stated, "We have approved entry visas for Iran's core delegation and entourage," according to AP and AFP reports.
The delegation is set to include President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, anonymous officials reported.
The State Department said, "In accordance with our obligations as the host country, the Iranian regime's core delegation will be able to attend the high-level week of the UN General Assembly," adding, "Travel restrictions will apply to the delegation, and the purchase of luxury goods and other items will be prohibited."
The State Department's decision to permit the Iranian president's entry is considered unusual, as no agreements have been reached regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz or Iran's nuclear program.
The Iranian delegation also attended the UN General Assembly in September of last year, before the outbreak of the war.
At that time, the State Department issued visas to a limited number of Iranian diplomats and strictly restricted the delegation's movement.
