President Lee Jae-myung will meet with Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), at Cheong Wa Dae this afternoon, September 17.
Cheong Wa Dae explained that the meeting was arranged after President Lee proposed discussing measures to strengthen the resilience of energy supply chains in the Asia-Pacific region on the occasion of the Group of Seven (G7) summit last June.
Accordingly, the meeting is expected to cover international energy market and industrial trends, along with ways to bolster global energy security in the era of electrification.
In particular, as the climate crisis intensifies—as evidenced by recent developments in the Middle East and massive flooding in Nepal—discussions are expected to focus on establishing new energy security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region to respond effectively.
Cheong Wa Dae stated, "Executive Director Birol is leading efforts to overcome the global energy crisis, including securing the collective release of 400 million barrels of emergency oil reserves from IEA member countries in response to the war in the Middle East, and has maintained close cooperative relations with our government."
