Director Lee Chang-dong has become the first South Korean director to receive the Ebert Director Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Lee stated that he has made films to understand human beings, adding that he will accept this award as encouragement to continue making such films in the future.
On the 13th local time, Director Lee received the Ebert Director Award at the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Awards.
The Ebert Director Award honors directors who have demonstrated groundbreaking changes and original vision.
Taking the stage, Lee remarked that film is the medium that best allows us to understand humans, and that he has made films up to now to achieve that understanding.
However, he noted that the more films he makes, the more he realizes how difficult human beings are to understand.
In an era where AI is replacing humans, he emphasized that cinema must still tell stories about humanity, adding that he accepts the award as encouragement to keep making such films going forward.
