The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) announced today (the 16th) that it has signed a business agreement with the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) to eradicate insurance fraud and fraudulent claims by medical institutions.
This measure follows growing criticism over the leakage of public and private insurance funds driven by ongoing insurance fraud abusing indemnity and auto insurance, as well as wrongful claims by nursing institutions.
The FSS and HIRA plan to strengthen information sharing to detect related crimes.
Using indemnity and auto insurance data, the two organizations will respond to abnormal signs such as over-treatment and expand monitoring of hospitals that violate medical fee standards and other regulations.
They also plan to discuss ways to secure financial resources for review operations.
In addition, they intend to revitalize professional knowledge and human resource exchanges related to insurance fraud and fraudulent claims for medical care benefits.
They have decided to operate a working-level consultative body for specific implementation moving forward.
FSS Governor Lee Chan-jin emphasized, "If insurance fraud allegations are detected at medical institutions making fraudulent claims, we will promptly request investigations as a stern warning to deter future violations."
HIRA President Hong Seung-kwon also stated, "This agreement is a meaningful first step toward jointly responding to illegal activities that threaten the soundness of public and private insurance and fostering a healthcare and financial environment trusted by the public."
