▲ Former Seoul City Councilor Kim Kyoung and Representative Kang Sun-oo, suspected of a 100 million won nomination bribe
Independent Representative Kang Sun-oo and former Seoul City Councilor Kim Kyoung, who are currently on trial in custody on charges of a 100 million won nomination bribe, have been additionally indicted on charges of making split donations.
The Public Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (led by Chief Prosecutor Kim Hyungwon) indicted Rep. Kang and former Councilor Kim on the 14th under the Political Funds Act.
Former Councilor Kim is accused of borrowing the names of dozens of people following the 2022 local elections to deliver approximately 130 million won in political donations to Rep. Kang across multiple occasions.
Investigations showed that Rep. Kang returned the 100 million won received in exchange for a local election nomination to former Councilor Kim, and then received the money back through such "split donation" methods.
The case has been assigned to Criminal Division 1 Single Judge of the Seoul Central District Court, which is currently hearing the duo's existing nomination bribery case.
The date for the first hearing has not yet been set.
Rep. Kang and former Councilor Kim were indicted in custody in March on charges of exchanging a shopping bag containing 100 million won at a hotel in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in January 2022 ahead of the local elections in exchange for a city council candidate nomination.
At the time, Rep. Kang was affiliated with the Democratic Party of Korea, and former Councilor Kim was subsequently given a single nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate for the Seoul Metropolitan Council in Rep. Kang's constituency of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, and was elected.
The sentencing hearing for the duo's nomination bribery case takes place today.
