U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that if the Republican Party wins the midterm elections in November, he will distribute 5,000 dollars, or about 6.7 million won, to every adult in the United States.
Speaking at a Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, on the 9th local time, President Trump made the pledge, premised on "if the Republicans win both the House and the Senate," vowing to "provide a dividend of 5,000 dollars to every adult American citizen."
President Trump emphasized, "It is very similar to how a successful company distributes cash dividends to its shareholders," adding, "This is my promise."
He then attached the condition that "that money must be spent inside the United States."
He added, "If the Republicans win, you win too, and you get 5,000 dollars. It will be called the 'Trump Dividend.'"
Currently, the Republican Party led by President Trump controls both the House and Senate of the federal legislature, but projections are emerging that the Democratic Party could recapture majority status in the House as well as the Senate in the midterms.
Although President Trump did not disclose the financial source and payout method for the dividend, criticism that it is effectively a vote-buying pledge ahead of the election seems unavoidable.
Legal controversies surrounding the move are also expected to flare up.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has promised direct cash support to Americans.
Last July, upon launching tax-deferred savings and investment accounts for American children, commonly known as "Trump accounts," it was announced that a one-time support of 1,000 dollars would be provided to children born during President Trump's term.
Appealing for votes for Republican candidates during his speech, President Trump also emphasized, "Think of my name as being on the ballot."
Regarding the war with Iran, he hinted once more at the possibility of bombing the underground nuclear facility known as "Pickaxe Mountain," saying, "We may have to do it (the underground nuclear facility bombing last year) again. There is another place called 'Pickaxe Mountain.'"
These remarks came right after the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a U.S. think tank, released an analysis that construction activity had surged this year at the site, which is suspected to be an underground Iranian nuclear facility.
President Trump has previously mentioned the possibility of attacking Pickaxe Mountain on multiple occasions.
President Trump said, "Since someone said there was a bit of movement at that location, we might have to hit that place too."
He added, "Thanks to the Space Force, we see everything," and "We can even see the tags on the clothes they (the Iranian military) wear."
Repeating his claim that the United States "controls the Strait of Hormuz," President Trump sarcastically remarked, "We will call it the 'Trump Strait.' The Iranian leadership will also be very amused by it."
Addressing the Iranian regime, President Trump claimed, "They are holding on desperately, hoping that we lose (in the midterms)," and "They are desperately eager to negotiate."
Regarding the "tariff war" with Canada, he said, "Things might work out well. Canada genuinely wants a deal. They are trying to reach an agreement," but added, "However, that lake (Lake Ontario) will come to be called 'Lake America.'"
