Director Christopher Nolan's new film, The Odyssey, has surpassed a cumulative total of 10 million moviegoers.
According to its distributor Universal Pictures on the 6th, The Odyssey crossed the 10 million cumulative audience mark at around 4 p.m. that day.
This milestone was achieved on the 33rd day since its release on August 5th.
The Odyssey is the second film released this year to attract 10 million viewers, following director Hang Hang-jun's The King's Warden.
It is the 10th foreign film in history and the first in 4 years to reach the 10 million viewer mark in South Korea, as well as director Nolan's second film to achieve 10 million viewers following Interstellar (2014).
Including both Korean and foreign films, it is the 35th.
Previous foreign films that surpassed 10 million viewers include Avatar (2009), Interstellar, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Aladdin (2019), Frozen 2 (2019), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
The Odyssey has maintained its box office momentum by holding the number one spot every single day from its release through today.
After surpassing 1 million viewers on the 4th day of release and 5 million on the 13th day, it broke through 8 million viewers on the 24th day, showing the fastest box office pace among films released this year.
The Odyssey is a film adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic poem The Odyssey, depicting the 10-year journey of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the king of Ithaca who led the Trojan War to victory, as he tries to return to his homeland.
A star-studded cast of Hollywood actors, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya, appeared in the film.
It also drew attention as the first film in movie history to have its entire 3-hour runtime (172 minutes) shot on IMAX film cameras.
The craze for "special theater viewings," centered around IMAX screens, was also a driving factor behind its box office success.
As of the previous day, the number of audience members who watched The Odyssey in IMAX theaters reached approximately 1.704 million, surpassing Avatar: The Way of Water (approximately 929,000) to record the highest number of viewers in history.
