Six individuals, including the head of Samsung Group's supra-corporate labor union and people who allegedly accessed the internal network without authorization, have been sent to prosecutors on suspicion of extracting personal information of some 100,000 Samsung Electronics executives and employees to create a "union blacklist."
The Hwaseong Dongtan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced today (September 4) that it has forwarded six people—four IP users who excessively accessed the site, an employee who mass-collected personal information through the internal system, and an employee who received the information—to prosecutors without detention on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act.
Previously, Samsung Electronics filed a criminal complaint on March 9, requesting punishment under the Personal Information Protection Act, claiming that an unidentified employee used other employees' personal information to compile a blacklist containing their union membership status.
Additionally, on March 16 of the same year, the company filed a complaint specifying one employee on charges of unauthorized collection and provision of employees' personal information using the internal security system.
Through measures such as searching and seizing servers at Samsung Electronics' Giheung plant, police identified four IP users who had excessively accessed the site. Following investigations, police concluded that some charges applied to them and converted their status to suspects.
It was revealed that they checked whether other employees had joined the union by using their personal information.
Police also confirmed circumstances where employees mass-collected personal information of executives and staff using the internal security system and transferred that data.
In May, the Samsung Electronics labor union reached a dramatic agreement on wage negotiations and agreed to withdraw the complaint. However, because this case does not fall under crimes subject to punishment only upon complaint or offenses subject to a victim's expressed intent not to punish, the police investigation continued.
