The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORSAIL) announced today (the 2nd) that the number of high-speed railway passengers reached 213,000 on the 1st, the first day of the KTX and SRT integration.
This represents a 7.9% increase compared to the same day last year.
In particular, the number of passengers departing from and arriving at Suseo Station, which had previously suffered from severe seat shortages, increased by 11.3% to reach 64,000.
This is analyzed to be the result of increased high-speed railway service frequencies and supplied seat capacities following the integration.
The daily number of KTX operations will increase by 23 runs during weekdays (from 379 to 402) and by 26 runs during weekends (from 431 to 457).
An additional 15,000 seats will be supplied daily on weekdays, and 17,000 seats on weekends.
No high-speed railway accidents or malfunctions occurred the previous day.
The Ministry and KORSAIL are working to stabilize initial operations by running a 24-hour emergency response team and deploying safety experts to the field.
Kim Tae-byung, Director General for Railway Policy at the Ministry, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the achievements of the high-speed railway integration translate into tangible benefits experienced by the public," adding, "We will thoroughly manage operations so that citizens can use the high-speed railway safely and conveniently during the upcoming Chuseok holiday."
