The film The Odyssey has surpassed 9 million admissions nationwide in 27 days since its release.
According to the integrated computer network for movie theater admissions by the Korean Film Council on September 1, The Odyssey attracted 145,919 moviegoers nationwide on August 31, maintaining its top spot at the box office. Its cumulative audience count reached 9,010,851.
Even in its fifth week of release, The Odyssey drew close to 150,000 daily moviegoers, boasting box office drawing power with little difference from the previous week. It is virtually certain to surpass the 10 million viewer mark by this weekend.
The uniqueness of being the first full IMAX feature film also served as a major catalyst for its box office success. According to CGV and the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing computer network on August 31, The Odyssey attracted 941,981 moviegoers (as of August 30) solely in IMAX theaters. This is the largest audience ever recorded for an IMAX release in South Korea. The previous IMAX box office record was held by Avatar: The Way of Water with 929,351 viewers.
The Odyssey depicts the journey of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), a hero who led the 10-year Trojan War to victory, as he sets out to return to his waiting wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (played by Tom Holland) in a kingdom plagued by plundering and power struggles amid the king's absence.
