The personal information of Jeong Chang-sung (31), a Chinese university lecturer who was arrested on charges of murdering a Chinese female exchange student who took his class and desecrating her body, was released today (September 1).
The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency posted Jeong's name, mugshot, and age on its website today.
The previous day, the police held a Personal Information Disclosure Deliberation Committee and decided to disclose the information, stating, "The brutality and severity of the crime are recognized, and there is sufficient evidence," adding, "We decided to disclose the personal information by comprehensively considering the public interest, such as crime prevention."
The personal information will be posted on the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency website until October 1.
Jeong was arrested on August 25 on charges of murdering a 25-year-old Chinese female exchange student surnamed A at his studio apartment in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, in the early hours of August 20, desecrating her body, and abandoning her remains in wooded areas and garbage dumps in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, and Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk Province.
He is also accused of filing a false report to throw off the investigation and traveling to Dongdaegu Station disguised in women's clothing to turn off the victim's mobile phone.
Police applied five charges against Jeong, including murder, desecration, abduction, and concealment of a corpse, and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means.
