Nearly 30% of All Missing Persons Cases in Jeju Handled Solely by a Single Police Officer

It has been revealed that about 30% of all adult missing persons reports received in Jeju were self-closed by a single police officer surnamed Boo, who is currently a suspect in the fraudulent closure of missing persons cases.

According to data on missing persons reports and current statuses submitted by the Korean National Police Agency to People Power Party lawmaker Kim Jae-seop today (August 30), a total of 1,048 adult missing persons cases were reported in Jeju from March of last year, when Police Officer Boo was assigned to the missing persons team at the Jeju Western Police Station, through the end of July this year.

Officer Boo was found to have independently closed 298 cases during his tenure on the missing persons team.

The proportion of cases closed by Officer Boo out of the total reports received stands at 28.44%, which is close to 30%.

During the period Officer Boo worked on the missing persons team, the total number of adult missing persons cases resolved (closed) was 1,047, including 687 cases in 2025 and 360 cases this year.

The proportion of cases closed by Officer Boo out of the total resolved cases is 28.46%.

Assuming that 12 missing persons team members across the three police stations in the province—Jeju Western Police Station, Jeju Eastern Police Station, and Seogwipo Police Station—each arithmetically closed an average of 87 to 88 cases per person, the number of cases closed by Officer Boo alone exceeds triple the average.

This means the number of missing persons cases resolved by Officer Boo is equivalent to the scale of missing persons reports received and resolved by an entire police station in the province.

In particular, given that such high closure rates are generally difficult to achieve in adult missing persons cases involving various types such as runaway instances, suspicions of sloppy or fraudulent case closures are inevitably intensifying.

In fact, Officer Boo was arrested on charges of fraudulently closing the missing persons reports of a woman in her 30s surnamed Jang in May and a man in her (or his) 60s surnamed Park last month.

Regarding whether there are additional cases of fraudulent closure of missing persons reports, the police stated that a full investigation is underway, but have not disclosed how far the investigation procedures have progressed.
