Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy Koo Yun-cheol, who was replaced in a cabinet reshuffle, initially considered postponing his attendance at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting, but ultimately reversed his decision to attend as scheduled.
Deputy Prime Minister Koo departed today (the 30th) to attend the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held in Asheville, United States.
It was learned that Koo initially arrived at Incheon International Airport and, upon hearing the news that he was included in the cabinet reshuffle, considered postponing his business trip to the United States.
However, it is reported that he changed his mind at the last minute to carry out his scheduled itinerary, considering that even if a new deputy prime minister candidate is announced, he must remain in office until a successor is appointed following confirmation hearings at the National Assembly.
In particular, it was reported that a decisive factor was the judgment that canceling the trip after having already scheduled bilateral meetings with key figures, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, would not serve the national interest.
At this meeting, Koo plans to introduce the solid fundamentals of the South Korean economy and efforts to expand mid-to-long-term growth potential in order to address structural challenges, while also presenting his views on key global economic issues such as debt and economic imbalances.
