Director Christopher Nolan's film 'Odyssey' has overtaken 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', which was released a week earlier, to become the highest-grossing foreign film released this year.
According to Universal Pictures on the 30th, the cumulative number of moviegoers for 'Odyssey' and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' reached approximately 8.471 million and 8.454 million, respectively, as of 7:00 a.m. on the 30th.
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' was released on the 29th of last month, while 'Odyssey' hit theaters a week later on the 5th of this month.
As the two works led the box office success for foreign films in the second half of the year, 'Odyssey' took the lead in the pace of attracting audiences.
'Odyssey' surpassed the cumulative milestone of 8 million viewers on the 28th, its 24th day since release, setting a record two days faster than 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', which reached the 8 million mark on the 23rd, its 26th day of release.
It is also the work that has mobilized 8 million viewers in the shortest period among films released this year.
Based on the ancient Greek epic 'Odyssey' by the poet Homer, the film depicts the 10-year adventure of the hero Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) as he tries to return to his hometown of Ithaca after the Trojan War.
This is director Nolan's new project three years after 'Oppenheimer' (2023), starring Matt Damon alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya.
'Odyssey' has maintained the number one spot in overall advance ticket sales for 28 consecutive days from the 3rd, two days prior to its release, until today, and has claimed the top spot at the box office for 25 consecutive days since its release.
Expectations are also growing for it to join the 10-million-viewer club.
If 'Odyssey' crosses the 10-million milestone, it will become the second 10-million movie among this year's releases following director Jang Hang-jun's 'The King and the Man', and the first foreign 10-million movie of the year.
